Marquette police say body of missing NMU student found in harbor

The Marquette Police Department announced that the body of missing Northern Michigan University student Trenton Massey was found in the Lower Harbor on Friday afternoon, April 24.

“On 04/24/2026 at approximately 3:30pm, the body of Trenton Massey was located submerged in the water of the Lower Harbor, north of the Shiras Dock,” the police department said in a release.

Massey’s body was discovered by volunteers from Hybrid Robotics, an underwater ROV manufacturing company located in Traverse City, the release said.

Massey, 21, a Northern Michigan University student from Shiawassee County, disappeared in late February after walking home from a downtown Marquette bar.

Massey was seen at approximately 3:08 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, walking east on a bike path at the 7th Street Bridge on the west side of downtown.

Police say Massey may have been trying to walk to his residence on McMillan Street in Marquette when he was last seen on cameras, wearing a black and olive green coat.

Police said Massey was later seen near East Baraga Avenue and the Founder’s Landing boardwalk, which is along the harbor.

“Massey appears to be disoriented and having difficulty walking,” police said of the video in a release in February.

Police eventually searched in the harbor using specialized equipment, but suspended their search for Massey after four days on Feb. 25.

Massey was a Corunna High School graduate, Corunna Superintendent John Fattal said in a statement in February.

Kelly Grinnell, of Owosso, started a gofundme to support Massey’s family. As of 6 p.m. April 24, the account had raised more than $61,800.

“Sarah Brock and her family are facing every parent’s worst nightmare: her son, Trenton Massey, is missing in Marquette, Michigan,” Grinnell wrote. “The days since his disappearance have been filled with uncertainty, fear, and an overwhelming sense of helplessness. Sarah and her loved ones are doing everything they can to find Trenton, but the emotional and financial toll is immense.”

The family recently conducted a memorial service at Founder’s Landing in Marquette in honor of Massey.

In a post on her Facebook page, Sarah Brock expressed shock on Friday.

“I have no words…my heart is broken into even a million more pieces than I ever thought it could. I am numb,” she wrote while sharing the police update.

On April 24, following the discovery, divers from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office recovered his body.

Massey’s body was turned over to UPHS EMS and transported to UPHS-Marquette pending an autopsy.

“Over the past two months, multiple agencies and volunteers assisted with the search from land, air, ice and water,” police said. In addition to the Marquette Police Department, other groups searching included Hybrid Robotics, Antrim County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Northern Michigan University Police Department, UPHS-Marquette EMS, Marquette City Fire Department, Michigan State Police K9s and Marine Services Team, U.S. Coast Guard Station Marquette, U.S. Army, Michigan DNR conservation officers, Alger County Sheriff’s Office, No One Left Behind K9 Search and Rescue, Northern Michigan University, Frontline Strong, and numerous volunteers from the community.

The Marquette Police Department said the investigation is continuing.
