A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fire that burned a large section of the Duncan Bay Nature Preserve in Cheboygan County.
According to the Cheboygan Police Department, officers and firefighters were dispatched to the Duncan Bay Nature Preserve area for a report of a fire at 8:13 p.m. on Friday, May 22. Fire personnel were on scene until 12:09 a.m. when the scene was turned over to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for overnight observations.
No injuries were reported due to the fire.
In the city’s release, Police Chief Daniel Loder thanked the public for submitting numerous tips about the fire. A 29-year-old man was arrested and lodged at the Cheboygan County Jail early on Saturday in relation to the incident.
Assisting agencies include the Inverness Fire Department, the Alverno Fire Department, the United States Coast Guard, the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office and the DNR. The investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to the Cheboygan Police Department at 231-627-4321.
The Little Traverse Conservancy, which manages the Duncan Bay Nature Preserve, provided an update on Facebook on Saturday. The post states: “We want to express our gratitude to the Cheboygan law enforcement and firefighters who contained last night’s fire at the Duncan Bay Nature Preserve. Thankfully no one was hurt and we understand a suspect has been detained. The trails and beach are accessible and we will be working to repair damages.”
