The children are home for the summer, the nights are longer, the chaos is louder. Some evenings, it’s just easier to grab a pie than cook at home. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the area’s numerous family-owned pizzerias, each with a unique take on select styles and customizable sides.
From the northside to the southside of Holland, and even just outside the local boundaries, here’s a non-exhaustive pizza tour with styles made popular in Chicago and Detroit (and beyond):
Skiles Tavern
154 E. Eighth St.
Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Mondays-Tuesdays, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays
This local “dive bar” opened in 1951 and offers thin crust pies with a variety of toppings.
Paolo’s Pizza
29 W. 16th St.
Hours: 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Fridays, 4-10 p.m. Saturdays, 4-8 p.m. Sundays
Paolo’s Pizza is a family-owned shop with specialty pizzas, wings, calzones and subs.
Doebs Pizzeria
503 W. 17th St.
Hours: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, 4-9 p.m. Saturdays
Doebs is owned and operated by local chef Chris Doebler. The menu includes thin crust and Detroit-style pizzas, as well as fresh sandwiches and pastas.
Don Petrino’s
12719 Riley St.
Hours: 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Sundays-Thursdays, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays
Don Petrino’s menu includes a variety of specialty pizzas, salads, sandwiches, wings, calzones and pastas.
Sluggo’s Pizzeria
231 Douglas Ave.
Hours: 10:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 10:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays, 12-7 p.m. Sundays
Sluggo’s serves a variety of specialty pizzas, subs, breadsticks, wings and salads. The breadsticks, in particular, have a wide array of customizable options.
Crust 54
45 E. Eighth St.
Hours: 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays
Crust 54 specializes in deep-dish and stone-fired thin crust pizzas.
Fricano’s Too
174 S. River Ave.
Hours: 4-11 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays
Fricano’s Too is broadly known for delicious thin-crust pizza. The business opened in 1950.
Peppino’s
977 Butternut Drive
Hours: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays, 12-9 p.m. Sundays
Peppino’s was founded in 1972 in Standale. The location in Holland offers carryout and delivery of pizza, grinders, wings and pastas.
Village Inn
934 Washington Ave.
Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sundays
Village Inn offers pizza, burgers, pasta dishes, subs and salads.
Papa Romano’s
1153 S. Washington Ave.
Hours: 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Fridays, 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturdays, 2-9 p.m. Sundays
The menu at Papa Romano’s includes pizza, salads, subs, wings, pitas and breads. While the brand is widespread, the franchise in Holland is locally owned.
Vitale’s Pizza of Zeeland
59 W. Washington Ave. in Zeeland
Hours: 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays
Vitale’s serves a extensive menu of salads, burgers, subs, pasta, pizza and starters. The restaurant started in 1991 as a carryout joint before becoming a full-service restaurant.
