Music picks: Jazz, community and new tunes at The Green Door highlight the weekend

Summer is heating up, and mid-Michigan has plenty of great music to go with it. From sweet jazz sounds at the Fish Ladder to the annual 517 Juneteenth Festival, this week packs a punch when it comes to music.

Open-air fun: Jazz with the Lansing Concert Band at the Riverfront Plaza

The Riverfront Plaza at the Lansing Center offers live music from the Lansing Concert Band on Thursday, June 18. The theme of the evening is “Jazz Big Band,” with the 18-piece ensemble and two vocalists offering up a mix of big band favorites, jazz standards, funk grooves, and timeless classics, according to organizers.

The Lansing Center, Lansing Board of Water & Light, Chase Creative, Granger Waste Services and LAFCU present the event. It’s part of the Lansing Center’s free riverfront concert series.

Festival vibes: 517 Juneteenth Festival in REO Town

Get ready for the annual 517 Juneteenth Festival on Saturday, June 20, which organizers call Lansing’s largest free cultural celebration. It’s a full day of live music, food, family and community in the heart of REO Town.

Expect a day and evening packed with live music, including headliners Jamila Woods, MikeyyAustin and JMT with performances by Kaels, Al Bettis, The Lansing Collective Worship Encounter, Christian Sykes and more.

“The 517 Juneteenth Weekend is a unique opportunity for the Mid-Michigan region to celebrate Black culture, expression, and experiences,” organizers say on the event’s official website.

CD release: From This Point On at Green Door

Jackson nu-metalcore band From This Point On releases its “Unfiled EP” at the Green Door in Lansing on Saturday, June 20. Scar Woven, the Harbor Divide and Hyporium open the event. They’ll perform the songs off the new EP.
