Looking at the Cheboygan area's top sports performers for April 24-25

It wasn’t an ultra-busy weekend of sports in the Cheboygan area.  

However, there were still plenty of athletes who delivered strong performances over the last few days.

There was also one team that took home a championship trophy.

Here’s a look at the Cheboygan area’s top high school sports performers for April 24-25.  

Cardinals capture tournament title at Central Lake

CENTRAL LAKE – The Onaway softball team might have lost its opening tournament game at Central Lake on Saturday, April 25, but the Cardinals ruled the day after that.  

Following a 5-3 setback to East Jordan, the Cardinals responded with victories over Central Lake (13-7), Ellsworth (19-1), and East Jordan (11-5) in the title game to capture the Maris Strong Invitational crown.

The Cardinals had a superb offensive day, led by senior Marley Szymoniak, who finished 8-for-11 with a triple and eight runs scored over the four games. Onaway also received strong hitting performances from Aubrey Havel (two triples, two doubles, five runs), Aleigha Garms (home run, two doubles, six runs), Layla Box (triple, two doubles, six runs), Shawny Shepard (triple, double, five runs), Natalee Hyde (two doubles, four runs), Ellory Howell (6-for-7), and Brooklyn Boughner (double, three runs).  

“It was a fun tournament for a great cause,” Onaway coach Lonny Metty said. “It was a great day for the girls, and I was glad to see the bats starting to come alive.” 

Onaway hosts Johannesburg-Lewiston on Monday, April 27.  

BASEBALL

Nolan Schley, Cheboygan – Recorded a hit against Armada at Hillman on April 25.  

Adam Woolery, Cheboygan – Tallied a hit against Hillman.  

Carter Hudson, Cheboygan – Finished with a hit against Hillman.  

Game 1 Result: Armada 15, Cheboygan 0  

More Cheboygan Stats: Michael Laway (two pitching strikeouts), Nolan Eustice (one pitching strikeout)  

Game 2 Final: Hillman 12, Cheboygan 1  

More Cheboygan Stats: Ben Schulz (four pitching strikeouts), Duncan Spies (two pitching strikeouts) 

Ty Kolly, Inland Lakes – Went 2-for-2 (double) with an RBI against Hastings in Charlotte on April 25.  

Cash DePauw, Inland Lakes – Finished 2-for-3 (double) with an RBI against Hastings. 

Collin Maves, Inland Lakes – Recorded a hit and two RBIs against Hastings. He also had three pitching strikeouts.  

Game 1 Final: Haslett 9, Inland Lakes 0  

Game 2 Final: Hastings 7, Inland Lakes 6  

More I-L Stats: Harper Lee (hit, RBI), Colby Saker (hit)  

Eli LaLonde, Onaway – Led the Cardinals with two hits against Montabella on April 25.  

Casey Kindt, Onaway – Finished with a hit, an RBI and two runs scored against Montabella. He also struck out two batters on the mound.  

Game 1 Final: Montabella 16, Onaway 6

GIRLS SOCCER  

Jaelyn Wheelock, Cheboygan – Netted a goal apiece against Hemlock and Alpena at the Alpena tournament on April 25.  

Game 1 Final: Bay City Western 8, Cheboygan 0  

Game 2 Final: Hemlock 3, Cheboygan 1  

Game 3 Final: Cheboygan 1, Alpena 1 

Cheboygan Coach Tom Markham: “We played some good teams, and we played better than the last time. We were missing some key players, but we definitely are improving. We need to minimize the costly mistakes in both the latter games when we’re dominating play. Mistakes in the last four minutes of each game cost us.” 

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD 

Tanner Howard, Inland Lakes – Placed fifth in the 200 (24.32) at the Harbor Springs Invitational on April 24.  

Jake Feagan, Inland Lakes – Took eighth in the 400 (55.90) at Harbor Springs.  

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD  

Estella Redding, Cheboygan – Finished eighth in the 400 (1:07.55) at Harbor Springs on April 24.  

Chloe Robinson, Inland Lakes – Earned second in the high jump (4-8) at Harbor Springs.  

Josephine Furman, Inland Lakes – Tied for fourth in the high jump (4-5) at Harbor Springs.  

Kaylee Taglauer, Inland Lakes – Captured eighth in the 200 (29.17) at Harbor Springs.  

MIXED TRACK AND FIELD  

4X200 Relay, Cheboygan – The team of Sophie Ecker, Jabari Relerford, Estella Redding and Darwin Libby finished eighth (1:53.40) at Harbor Springs.  

4X200 Relay, Inland Lakes – The team of Faith Lehre, Jake Feagan, Chloe Robinson and Tanner Howard took fourth (1:46.08) at Harbor Springs.  

4X400 Relay, Inland Lakes – The team of Kaylee Taglauer, Jake Feagan, Josephine Furman and Tanner Howard placed fourth (4:03.97) at Harbor Springs.
