The spring season is underway and in full force, giving the area plenty of top performers in high school sports each week.
Here is a look at the top performers of the week:
Ella Achterhof, Hamilton soccer
Achterhof scored three goals and dished out an assist in a 5-0 win over Zeeland West on Monday, April 20.
Novella DeGraaf, Saugatuck track
DeGraaf had a standout all-around performance in a double-dual with Gobles and Black River on Monday, April 20, winning four events – the 200-meter dash (27.75), 100-meter hurdles (18.67), pole vault (9-6), and long jump (15-5).
Lily Huizenga, Zeeland East track
The Chix thrower won both the shot put and discus in a tri meet on Tuesday to help the Chix beat Hamilton and Spring Lake. She then finished second in both events at the Grand Rapids Elite Challenge on Saturday, April 25, at Houseman Field.
Carter Ruzicka, Hamilton track and field
The Hawkeyes senior won the shot put (44-0) and the discus (130-8) to lead Hamilton to the Bob Misner Invitational championship on Saturday, April 25.
Ashton Skinner, Saugatuck track
Skinner had a strong meet in the hurdles, winning both the 110-meter hurdles (17.37) and 300-meter hurdles (46.27) in a double-dual win over Gobles and Black River on Monday, April 20.
Camryn Nadig, Holland Christian tennis
The Maroons No. 1 singles player defeated Unity Christian’s Jayda Velzen 6-2, 7-5, to lead Holland Christian to an 8-0 win on Monday, April 20. Nadig went 3-0 on the week.
Kimberly Mendoza-Huynh, Fennville soccer
The Blackhawks leader scored two goals and added an assist in a 6-1 win over Bloomingdale on Monday, April 20.
Candela Ruiz Martinez, Fennville soccer
The Blackhawk scored three goals and tallied two assists in a 6-1 win over Bloomingdale on Monday, April 20.
Terra Schuberg, Zeeland East track
The Chix junior won the 100 meters (13.08) and 200 meters (27.22) in a double dual win over Hamilton and Spring Lake on Tuesday, April 21.
Nate Davis, Zeeland East track
The Chix junior won the 1,600 meters (4:51.16) and the 3,200 (11:21.62) in a double-dual win over Hamilton and Spring Lake on Tuesday, April 21.
Ethan Campbell, Zeeland East baseball
The Chix hurler struck out 12 walked none and gave up no hits or runs in a five-inning 11-0 win over Holland Christian on Tuesday, April 21. One batter reached on an error.
Hayden Johnson, Fennville softball
The Blackhawks slugger had five hits in a doubleheader against Allegan, leading Fennville to a 14-10 comeback victory in the first game on Tuesday, April 21.
Nidia Villalobos, Fennville soccer
The Blackhawks player scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over West Michigan Lutheran on Thursday, April 23.
Mike Girman, Zeeland West golf
The Dux golfer set the home match school record with a round of 33 at Crestview. It tied the nine-hole school record that was set multiple times on road courses.
Katie Murphy, Zeeland East track and field
The Chix athlete broke the school record in the pole vault this week, clearing 10 feet, 7 inches, to break the record by four inches.
Solomon Wegmeyer, West Ottawa baseball
The junior pitcher threw a no-hitter to beat Rockford 2-1 on Thursday, April 23. He struck out four and walked four as the Panthers won the season series from the Rams 2-1.
