LifeWays conducting 'internal evaluations' after failed bond request

LifeWays officials say they remain committed to providing local behavioral health services after leaders in Hillsdale County formally ended consideration of a $15.5 million county-backed bond that would’ve supported a new headquarters in Hillsdale’s Industrial Park.

The Hillsdale County Board of Commissioners voted May 12 to rescind two key resolutions tied to the project, effectively ending the municipality’s involvement in the proposed facility on Industrial Drive.

The commissioners’ actions followed an earlier decision from LifeWays to withdraw the request amid sustained public opposition and timeline uncertainty. The organization is currently headquartered at 25 Care Drive in Hillsdale County, with a separate building for services in Jackson County.

The new building was proposed as the organization sought to address and expand long-term space and service needs. Following the meeting May 12, LifeWays Public Relations Strategist and Media Liaison Chelsea Oliver said the agency remains focused on maintaining access to care, despite the setback.

“LifeWays remains committed to ensuring that residents of Hillsdale County continue to have access to needed behavioral health services in a safe and appropriate environment,” Oliver said. “While the bond request has been withdrawn, our commitment to the community has not changed.”

The organization, she said, is reviewing alternatives and evaluating next steps for operations in Hillsdale County. Oliver wasn’t immediately prepared to discuss specific financial strategies, citing ongoing internal evaluations.
