Vote ‘yes’ on Wayne County Public Transportation millage
I was very disappointed to see the recent Detroit News Editorial Board opinion piece opposing the upcoming Wayne County Public Transportation Millage. How can our region ever be truly “connected” if all residents cannot get around? I urge readers to vote yes on this important proposal and play a part in optimizing regional growth in so many ways.

George Washington understood what today’s leaders forget
When the age of politicians in Washington comes up, it’s usually in the context of term limits. Daniel Allott gave us a different perspective in his recent op-ed (“Graham, McConnell and the sad spectacle of clinging to power,” July 16). He discussed the pathos of individuals hanging on long after they should have retired. They start with a drive for power and influence and end with “the fear of losing both.”
In contrast, consider George Washington at the end of the Revolutionary War. His officers — and other prominent people — urged him to stay and take power, and even proclaim himself king. Washington refused, instead appearing before the Continental Congress to resign his commission.
In London, the great American artist Benjamin West confirmed to King George III that Washington was going to resign. The king’s response: “If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world.” Such is the allure of power.
