STURGIS, MI — Royalty week at Sturgis High School is officially underway again.
The 2026 Winterfest week takes place this week for the Trojans, culminating in the announcement of the king and queen on Friday night.
Sturgis will be playing host to rival Three Rivers in a varsity double header on Friday night. The crowning of the king and queen, following the introduction of the nominees this year, will take place between the two games. Sturgis is scheduled to play the Wildcats in the girl’s game at 5:30 p.m.
This year’s nominees for king of Winterfest are Parker Altimus, Lukis Bir, Adrian Correa, Owen Frost, Ivan Gonzalez, Alan Montoya, Roy van der Hulse and Fernando Villasan.
Nominees for the queen of Winterfest are Sydney Bir, Mercedes Blair, Myah Burkey, Kenzie Eicher, Aubrey Foley, Tessa Hatt, Berkley Holtz and Jade Munoz.
Winterfest week began on Sunday, Feb. 15 with the annual powderpuff volleyball games.
The Snowball dance takes place on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 8-11 p.m. at the high school.
Each day this week will have a theme attached to it as well. The student senate at SHS established the theme days for the week during a brainstorm session, which were then approved by school officials.
Monday is pajama day with school appropriate PJs. Tuesday features “dress as your type” where students can dress up in clothes that represent the style or profession of the person they’re attracted to, whether it’s sport, country, nerdy, a musician, business professional or the like.
Wednesday is jersey day.
On Thursday, students will follow the “white lie shirt” theme, which allows them to wear a shirt which could tell a white lie about themselves, topics being school appropriate.
Finally, Friday features orange and black day. In addition this year, students will be able to wear pink to help support the Coaches vs Cancer games to be played on Friday night.
There will also be a United Way live auction on Friday during the games. The St. Joseph United Way will be in attendance with the live auction, where those in attendance will be able to bid on several local items helping raise money.
