Tinted windows are a popular feature on vehicles, but there are legal restrictions that vary from state to state — including in Michigan.
Tinted windows can help keep a car’s interior cool by blocking varying levels of sunlight, one of its benefits. But if you’re planning to tint your windows in Michigan, be aware the level of tint — and which windows are tinted — is regulated by state law.
Here’s what the laws are for tinted windows in Michigan:
Is it legal to have tinted windows in Michigan?
It depends on which windows are tinted and how much tint is applied, according to Michigan’s Vehicle Code.
It’s illegal for drivers to have a tinted front windshield, front driver and passenger windows. Front tinting is limited to the top 4 inches of the windshield and front windows.
In addition, drivers may have a tinted rear windows that does not exceed solar reflectance of 35% or more in the visible light range, including a silver or gold reflective film, the law says.
For drivers with light sensitivity or photosensitivity, they may obtain a medical exception with a signed letter from their physician or optometrist.
Why are tinted windows a problem?
Tinted windows have legal limits because they can obstruct the driver’s view especially at night, according to Vinylfrog.com.
What are the benefits to tinted windows?
In addition to adding style to your car, tinted windows are installed to block out the sun, to keep your car cooler, to reduce glare and for privacy or security purposes, according to Metro Restyling, a company that sells vinyl wrap products.
What are the tint percentages?
There are varying tint materials and tint percentages to consider for windows. The percentage determines the visible light transmission (VLT), meaning how much light gets through.
For example, a 5% tint is very dark letting in just 5% of sunlight, which is known as a limo tint, according to TLC Auto Glass.
The materials used can be a dye, ceramic, carbon polymer or metallic tint.
Is it expensive to tint your windows?
Window tinting can cost hundreds of dollars depending on the window size, number of windows and design that would require more labor and materials, according to Metro Restyling.
Can tractor-trailers have tinted windows?
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the answer is yes, as long as the light transmission is not restricted to less than 70 percent of normal (refer to the American Standards Association publication Z26.1-1966 and Z26.1a-1969).
