Michigan’s Upper Peninsula prepares for another round of wintry weather expected to produce dangerous freezing rain beginning Friday night, April 4 — an ice storm warning and winter storm watch are in place.
“Freezing rain will spread across much of the U.P. tonight (April 3), with sleet mixed in over the Keweenaw,” the Marquette National Weather Service posted on X on April 3. “Tree damage and power outages are possible due to significant ice accumulations of up to 0.4 inches. If you must travel, take it slow and have a winter survival kit.”
Officials issued an ice storm warning for the central-western U.P. set to expire Saturday afternoon, April 4.
At most 0.5 an inch of ice and 3 inches of snow is forecast to coat surfaces by Saturday night, April 4, according to the Marquette NWS.
A winter storm watch is also in place for the eastern U.P. for 0.3 of an inch of ice and wind gusts up to 30 mph.
“Another system will spread rain and freezing rain across northern Michigan late tonight (April 3) and Saturday (April 4). Most of this will fall as rain in northwest Lower Michigan,” Gaylord NWS said on X on April 3.
The first round of mixed precipitation caused more than 10,000 power outages across northern Michigan reported Friday morning, April 3 — as workers restore power that number has been brought down to 7,855 as of 9:40 a.m., according to PowerOutage.com.
“Travel is strongly discouraged. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Prepare for possible power outages,” NWS said.
