ERIE – Luke Dulecki feared his senior season for New Boston Huron’s cross country team might end before it started.
He suffered a stress fracture during the summer that kept him from training for 10 days.
“A doctor gave me a brace that saved my entire season,” Dulecki said.
Dulecki says he ran completely pain free in the 43rd annual Frank Connolly Relays at Erie Mason on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
He and partner Cameron Crane were the boys champions in the meet that features two-runner teams each alternating for one-mile legs. They also completed a sweep of Division 1 by Huron.
The Chiefs took the boys team title with 34 points to 43 by Airport. The girls also narrowly nipped Airport 40-43.
Erie Mason claimed the boys Division II team crown and Blissfield girls ruled girls Division II.
Dulecki outdueled reigning Monroe County Region Boys Runner of the Year Jake Stanislawski of Flat Rock in a sprint to the finish.
“That’s the best the area has to offer,” Dulecki said of Stanislawski. “I really like competing with Flat Rock. They are our biggest rival.”
Dulecki completed his final mile in 4:51, which is not far off his best time in the 1,600 meters during track and field season (4:36).
Crane was excited to be paired with Dulecki.
“I thought that we had a good shot,” he said. “We knew that our biggest competition would probably be Flat Rock. I just wanted to get us in the best position for Luke.”
Dulecki and Crane were supported by Broderick Yensch-Tanner Kuhn (13) and Garrett-Patrick (25).
Leading Huron’s girls to the championship were Falyn Doss-Avery Turk (7), Jennalynn Bronstein-Zoey Cheney (14) and Alice Williams-Isa Vargo (19).
Mason’s boys had Weston Albright-Joseph Colaluca, Porter Ravary-David Mills and Brayden Hincher-Caleb Healey go 5-10-12.
Other Region duos in the boys top 20 were: Phineus Totten-Christian Crannen of SMCC, third; Will Dobbertin-Easton Danic of Airport, sixth; Carter Lee-Mason Tulik of Jefferson, eighth; Dario Barella-Calvin Haydamacker of Flat Rock, 15th; Hayden Bovair-Hunter Rodak of Airport, 16th; Luke Masserant-Gabe Busen of Jefferson, 17th and Freeman Spencer-Colton Childress of Monroe Milers, 18th.
