A laundromat on Holland’s northside recently completed a hefty chunk of renovations — and it’s safe to say customers have noticed.
A series of renovations have been ongoing at The Laundry Room North (977 Butternut Drive) since the business was purchased roughly three years ago by Holland Area Laundry Service.
“It was in kind of rough shape when we took over,” said Ben Schaap, who runs the business with his parents and siblings. “We really try to make … a safe, clean and efficient environment.”
Schaap’s father has worked in laundromats for decades, starting his business around the age of 30. Schaap said renovations at The Laundry Room began upon purchase and have stretched from top to bottom, including cleaning, painting and repaired equipment.
The laundromat has new vending machines, three new sets of dryers, new washers (including a few with high capacity), new flooring, a refinished bathroom, new tables and seating for customers, a new soap machine, new ceiling fans, a television, working air conditioning and more.
The site could see even more updates after the busy summer season, according to Schaap, and plans for new signage are underway.
“The busy season really starts toward the end of May,” Schaap said. “We get a lot of customers who come from down south and want to wash all their bedding. We’ve tried to cram in as much as we could before (then).”
So far, customers have enjoyed the improvements — voicing their approval to the family.
“I couldn’t be more thankful that customers are saying those things to us,” Schaap said. “It makes me happy to see them coming back and enjoying the space.”
The Laundry Room North is one of four businesses that make up Holland Area Laundry Service, including two additional locations in Holland (Southshore Laundry and The Laundry Room) and one in Grand Haven (Centertown Laundromat).
