Holland Christian steals late win; West Ottawa sweeps Grandville; 36 for Honeycutt

The Holland Christian boys basketball team stole a 57-56 win over Covenant Christian on Tuesday, Feb. 3, as Titus Spencer poked away a steal to seal the victory in the final seconds.

Davis Alderink scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to help the Maroons earn the non-conference win.

“What a great team win on the road,” Holland Christian coach Brad Jansen said. “Tough environment as it always is at Covenant. We played a very physical and talented Charger team and came out on top.”

Jake Holcomb had 16 points, Moses Vanderbilt had 14, Jacob Chase had six and Spencer scored five.

BOYS BASKETBALL

West Ottawa 70, Grandville 63

A balanced scoring attack led the Panthers to the OK Red victory.

JT Gill and Makai Campos each scored 19 points. Quinten Edwards and Darien Stewart each had 13 and Jay Watson added nine.

“We almost had five guys in double figures and that is the strength of our team. On any given night, any of them can be our leading scorer,” West Ottawa coach Jared Redell said. “I thought both JT and Makai really controlled the ball and Grandville had a hard time keeping both of them in front of them. Q and Darien really attacked the rim and cleaned up the boards for us down the stretch. Jay hit some big shots, too.

“It is a battle every game in our league. I really believe we have six of the top 20 teams in Division 1.”

Hamilton 76, Zeeland West 37

The Hawkeyes scored 50 points in the first half to race to the OK Black victory.

Garner Hulst poured in 23 points. Collin Schippa had 13 and Colin Vork added 11.

Zeeland East 56, Spring Lake 53

The Chix nailed 10 3-pointers in the first half to propel them to the OK Black victory.

But Spring Lake took a 49-43 lead into the fourth quarter. But the Chix started the fourth on a 10-0 run, holding the Lakers scoreless for the first 6 minutes of the fourth quarter.

The Lakers didn’t go away, hitting a 3 late, but Will Drnek and Isaiah Beckum hit free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

Drnek totaled 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead the Chix (11-4). Caleb Claerbaut had 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Isaiah Jones had nine points off the bench. Beckum scored seven and Landon Mack hit a pair of 3s.

Unity Christian 76, Holland 34

The Crusaders (13-2) remained unbeaten in the OK Black at 7-0 with the win.

Leading the Dutch (7-10, 3-5 OK Black) was Keegan Hulst and Josiah VanHekken with seven points apiece.

Unity Christians Luke Tubergen led all scorers with 14 points. 

Gobles 65, Black River 39

Jamison Huizenga scored 15 points to lead the River Rats (3-10). Melvin Thomas had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

“Tonight was just not our night,” Black River coach Darrion Denham said. “Rotation wasn’t there and we got out-hustled. We played such a great disciplined team tonight and we didn’t bring our ‘A’ game.”

Gobles 42, Fennville 35

The Blackhawks led 20-15 at halftime but fell to undefeated Gobles (14-0).

Gavin Kempker had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Fennville (8-6), while Damien Smith had nine points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

West Ottawa 66, Grandville 60

The Panthers won the OK Red showdown behind 36 points from Jana Honeycutt.

Jayla Means added 11 for the Panthers.

“This is the most complete game our team has played in the conference,” West Ottawa coach Kelly Wandel said.

Grandville’s Brynnly Man and Chloe Gray each scored 23.

Covenant Christian 45, Holland Christian 36

The Maroons lost the non-conference matchup on Tuesday, Feb. 3. Holland Christian trailed by one with 3 minutes remaining but couldn’t get anything to fall down the stretch.

Allison Lamer had 12 points, Kate Van Appledorn had 11 and Brooklyn Phelps added eight.

Zeeland West 39, Hamilton 29

The Dux won the OK Black showdown behind Jenna Hendricks, who scored 16 points and Sadie Kragt, who had 12.

Hamilton was led by Leah Brink with nine points and Brooke Petroelje with seven.

Spring Lake 48, Zeeland East 36

The Chix lost the OK Black game. CC Kuras scored nine and Lizzie Risdon had eight.

Constantine 39, Fennville 30

Ceeley Howard had 15 points, Amiyah Johnson had nine and Veda Seward grabbed nine rebounds.

Saugatuck 55, Constantine 33

The No. 10 Trailblazers earned the win on Saturday, Jan. 31.

Mylah Simpson had 19 points and Talia Laskowski had 14.
