The Midwest heat wave brought record-breaking highs to Michigan, and more are likely on the way.
On Sunday, June 22, several Michigan cities reported record highs in both the Lower and Upper peninsulas.
Officials reported a record high in Alpena at 97 degrees on June 22, breaking the previous record at 93 set in 1975.
Saginaw saw a record high of 95 degrees, breaking the previous record at 94 degrees set in 1966, according to the National Weather Service.
Traverse City topped 94 degrees on June 22 to set a new record. The previous high of 93 was set in 1966.
In addition, Pellston recorded 94 degrees to break the record of 92 set in 1957, 1975 and 1983. Gaylord posted 94 degrees, topping the 1983 mark of 93.
Gaylord also set a record high low temperature of 78 degrees, breaking mark of 77 from 1973.
The heat wave also brought extreme highs to the Upper Peninsula.
“A record high temperature of 93 degrees was set in Marquette, MI (Sunday, June 22). This breaks the old record of 90 degrees set in 1995,” the NWS said. The record was tied in 2023.

When is the heat wave going to end in Michigan?
Officials expect Tuesday, June 24, to be the final day for extremely hot temperatures in Michigan.
The heat advisories issued for the Lower Peninsula, and the extreme heat warnings for select southern counties will conclude at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, according to the NWS.
What causes a heat wave?
Heat waves are formed by trapped air that hovers in place, warming areas like an oven, according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.
“A heat wave is a period of unusually hot weather that typically lasts two or more days,” the NOAA said. “To be considered a heat wave, the temperatures have to be outside the historical averages for a given area.”
This is formed when a high-pressure system forces air downward preventing air from the ground to rise, therefore, allowing conditions to warm.
