2024 Season Review

Bynum has been a sound tackler throughout his career, which has helped him make an impact in the run game, and he also brings excellent ball production to the Colts’ secondary as well, totaling five interceptions and 11 pass breakups over the last two seasons.

Last season specifically, Bynum made 92 of his 103 tackle attempts, and allowed a completion rate of 64% on 45 targets at 13.6 yards per catch. Quarterbacks had a below-average passer rating of 94.2 when targeting Bynum.

“Versatility, leadership,” Bynum said when asked what he brings to the Colts. “Everybody sees all the celebrations, everything that goes viral in the media. But a lot of people don’t see the work behind it. I pride myself on being one of the hardest workers in the room, putting in so much extra work, being a leader, leading by example, not a super rah-rah guy but somebody that’s always going to be consistent.

“Being in the right spots on the field, but also off the field, being somebody that’s really locked in in the meeting room and keeping my head down, focused during the week. It doesn’t seem like it because obviously I’m really out there in the media on Sundays, but during the week I’m locked in because I want to be able to earn those moments to be able to have fun on the field on Sundays.”

Looking ahead to the 2025 season

Bynum is a terrific fit for Lou Anarumo’s defense. For one, he’s comfortable playing on an island and patrolling the back end of the secondary, which is something he is going to be tasked with doing. And as a player with cornerback experience, he brings good ball skills–as noted above–to the Indianapolis defense.

But in addition to that, while the majority of Bynum’s playing time has come as a free safety, he has the versatility to really play all over the secondary. This ability will be vital in Anarumo’s defense, which is going to be disguise-heavy and ask its defensive backs to fill a variety of roles as needed.

“He’s got the versatility to be a deep field safety, an at the line of scrimmage player, a blitzer, he can play some of the big nickel role if you need him to with that corner coverage ability and that shows up the most on some of those weighty downs–third down, red zone where you can really align any different way,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said of Bynum, via James Boyd of The Athletic. “You can play man, zone, pressure, he’s really done it all.”
