Plummeting overnight temperatures in northern Lower Michigan could damage plants, weather experts warned Tuesday.
The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for 20 counties and a frost warning for 11 others. The agency said crops and other sensitive vegetation including outdoor plants could be killed if left uncovered.
The cold weather could potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing as well, NWS said.
Some communities across the region could reach temperatures as low as 28 overnight into Wednesday morning, according to NWS.

Wildfire threat in mix
The warnings come while northern Michigan deals with the threat of wildfires amid relatively dry and gusty conditions.
The unseasonably cold weather is expected to continue with overnight lows again reaching the upper 20s in parts of Lower Michigan on Wednesday night into Thursday morning, according to NWS.

Agricultural producers and home gardeners can take the following steps to protect their plants form frost or a minor freeze, according to the Michigan State University Extension.
