Exam pushed for Adrian woman accused of killing sister in hospice

A preliminary examination in the case against a local woman accused of killing a hospice patient has been adjourned until August, according to court officials.

Virginia Landis Stewart, 58, was arraigned June 11 on one count of open murder in connection with the death of her sister, Frances Stewart, 61, of Adrian.

Stewart’s preliminary exam has been rescheduled in Lenawee County’s 2A District Court for 9 a.m. Aug. 19 before Judge Laura Schaedler. She is represented by attorney Elias Muawad.

Officials allege the defendant removed her sister’s oxygen mask and administered a fatal dose of morphine. Her bond was set at $2 million.

Anyone with information about the incident, or witnesses who haven’t yet spoken with investigators, is asked to contact the Adrian Police Department at 517-264-4808 or email apdtps@adrianmi.gov.
