Gladwin city officials said Wednesday that its wastewater treatment plant is operating normally and residents can resume flushing toilets and running water.
Their announcement comes a day after they asked residents to refrain from using water because lightning struck the community’s water treatment plant during a thunderstorm the previous night.
“The city of Gladwin is pleased to announce that wastewater services are operating safely, and residents and businesses may resume normal use of their facilities,” Kimberly Hines, the city’s administrator, said in a statement. “While work continues to fully assess the damage to equipment and restore the wastewater treatment plant to normal operations, our team has implemented a safe operational solution that allows the system to continue serving the community.”
However, city officials ask the community to conserve water.
“As a precaution, we continue to ask residents and businesses to conserve water whenever practical until the treatment plant has been fully assessed and returned to normal operating conditions,” Hines’ statement said. “Conserving water will help reduce unnecessary demand on the system while restoration efforts continue.”
On Tuesday, the city urged residents not to use bathroom facilities, including toilets, sinks, showers, and other plumbing fixtures, to avoid sewage backups.
