Emmet County extends flood debris voucher redemption for residents

Emmet County Recycling announced on Thursday, June 18 that the redemption deadline for the county’s Flood Debris Voucher Program has been extended.

According to the announcement, the vouchers previously marked with a July 1 expiration date will now be accepted through Aug. 1 at the Emmet County Pleasantview Drop-Off Center and Transfer Station, located at 7363 S. Pleasantview Road in Harbor Springs.

Emmet County was among many regions impacted by severe flooding in April caused by rainfall and snowmelt. Earlier this month, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer asked President Donald Trump to issue a presidential disaster declaration for 43 Michigan counties impacted by destructive spring weather, including Emmet County.

Locally, sections of M-119 were washed out and seriously damaged. The Pellston Regional Airport closed for almost a month due to flooding on the runways. Waterside infrastructure like docks, stairways and benches were submerged, and officials have warned hazardous conditions remain for boaters. Standing water is even still visible in some locations.

According to Emmet County Recycling, eligible households may receive up to two vouchers, at a $144 value, for the disposal of flood-related debris. This effort is intended to help offset disposal costs for residents.

For more information, residents can call the Emmet County Department of Public Works at 231-348-0640.
