When Logan Keilen entered college baseball’s transfer portal, he had no expectations.
The 2024 St. Johns graduate had a goal of just finding a fit at a place where he could develop the best.
Keilen, a catcher and designated hitter, ended up finding an ideal fit at a prominent Division I program.
Keilen recently committed to continue his baseball career at Georgia Tech after spending two seasons at Central Michigan.
Georgia Tech is coming off a 50-11 season that included an ACC title and a trip to an NCAA regional final.
“That’s the great thing about Georgia Tech is they develop catchers at the highest level,” Keilen said. “They develop hitters at the highest level. My whole game is going to grow, which is awesome. I’m super excited to just get down there and get started and get to work.”
Keilen’s opportunity at Georgia Tech comes following a redshirt freshman season in which he hit. 296 with seven home runs and 42 RBIs while batting in the heart of the CMU order. He made 31 starts at catcher and 10 at designated hitter for the Chippewas this spring.
“It’s big just being able to put up good numbers and having the proof behind you,” Keilen said of his spring season at CMU.
Keilen is spending this summer playing with the Bismarck Larks in Bismarck, North Dakota, in the Northwoods League. He is working to get ready for this fall and what is to come in a Georgia Tech program that has produced notable major leaguers like Charlie Blackmon, Nomar Garciaparra, Mark Teixiera and catchers Jason Varitek and Matt Wieters.
He hopes his transfer to Georgia Tech gives him his best chance of being able to play beyond college.
“I knew to get to the next step I needed to find a better fit for me,” Keilen said. “That’s kind of the reason I decided to enter (the portal).
“(I’d like) to play as long as I can, whether that may be pro ball. Obviously I’d love that and that’s a goal of mine. Being able to play as long as I can.”
