Disposal opportunity for small scrap tires planned in Coldwater

Branch County holds its annual scrap tire recycling on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the east parking lot of the county complex off Marshall Road at Keith Wilhelm Drive.

The event collects only passenger car and pickup tires. No farm and large truck tires are accepted.

State laws allow vehicles to carry a maximum of 10 tires to the event.

The county hosts the event south of the jail and animal shelter, which is equipped with 24-hour surveillance.

In recent years, people have dumped tires in the general area of the collection site.

The county warns that unloading and dumping tires on the grounds outside designated drop-off times will be considered illegal dumping and will result in citations.

Branch County, through the Van Buren Conservation District, received an Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy Scrap Tire Grant to provide the service.

You can’t dump tires under Michigan’s Environmental Protection Act.

It’s illegal to dispose of whole tires even in landfills.

Used tires must be handled through registered haulers, processors, or collection sites.
