Detroit People Mover closed after torn track cable. What to know

The Detroit People Mover will remain closed after officials discovered a large piece of metal underneath one of the train vehicles tore through a significant length of track cable, officials announced on Friday, March 20.

The system has been closed since the afternoon of March 13, following hours of high winds that caused debris to get stuck on the guideway track.

After performing multiple inspections, the Detroit Transportation Corp.’s maintenance and operations teams found the large piece of metal.

Officials say the trains were moved after all objects were cleared to avoid further issues.

“As repair activities continue in the impacted sections, DPM will reopen following operational testing of all components. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience during this downtime,” a post on Facebook reads.

It is not yet clear when the 2.9-mile system will reopen.

The Free Press reached out to officials at the Detroit People Mover, who did not immediately respond for comment Monday morning.
