Here are The Sentinel's Students of the Week for May 22

Another week, another collection of exceptional local students.

Each week, high school principals and staffers around Holland share their nominees for Student of the Week with The Sentinel. We share those honorees online Fridays and in print Sundays.

This week’s students were recognized for impressive leadership, driving classroom discussions and supporting their peers.

Anahi Sanchez, Fennville High School

Anahi works hard in the classroom, is actively engaged with our student body and is a natural leader in the hallways. Over the past four years, she’s enjoyed meeting new people, developing strong connections with staff and students and making great memories together. Her favorite subject is math.

Anahi enjoys going to the gym and spending time with family and friends. After high school, she plans to attend GVSU to study nursing. Her advice to other students is to “get involved, participate in all activities and enjoy high school, because it goes by so fast!” Congratulations, Anahi. Fennville is proud of you!

Dane Kolk, Holland Christian High School

Dane (Mark) Kolk is an extraordinarily expressive violist who throws himself fully into his music making. Dane is always willing to do whatever is needed to help the group succeed, whether in orchestra or high-level classes. Dane’s self-giving spirit and servant heart — including playing for chapel and other public events — make him the perfect recipient of the orchestra’s Servant Leadership Award.

Furthermore, in other classes, Dane asks excellent questions and is thoughtful, hardworking, wise and considerate, while not needing to be the center of attention. He helps his whole class think with more depth.

Daniel (Jose) Salguera Allen, West Ottawa High School

Daniel has been an outstanding LINK in his fourth-hour class. He’s gone out of his way to provide support to his peer by making sure the student is on task throughout the class period, asking him how he’s doing, and changing the student’s negative responses to positive self-talk.
