CONSTANTINE — Constantine graduate (as of last week) Jaedyn Herlein has been voted as the athlete of the week, presented by Glen Oaks Community College.
Herlein won the award, which came to a conclusion for voting purposes, on Monday evening. The poll ran throughout the course of the weekend with more than 30,000 tallies cast for athlete of the week honors. Our good friends at Glen Oaks Community College remain the sponsor for the weekly award.
Herlein is heading to the MHSAA Division 3 state track and field finals this weekend. The Division 3 finals will be hosted by Kent City. Last week, Herlein qualified for those state finals in four separate events.
Per MHSAA rules, a student athlete can only compete in four events in a single day and Herlein was able to qualify for the state finals in all four of her races. A student athlete finishing in one of the top two spots at the regional round punches their respective ticket to the state finals.
Herlein was able to run to second place in both of the hurdle races, the 100 and 300 meters. She was also part of the 800 and mile relay teams for Constantine, which qualified for state.
In total, there were 30,500 votes cast this past weekend for the athlete of the week honors. Herlein earned 54.87 percent of the total votes cast, totaling 16,736 ballots.
Madison Shaw of Bronson was a close second for the honors. Shaw earned 13,088 votes for 42.91 percent of the total cast. Shaw threw a perfect game for Bronson softball at the Polish Classic as the Vikings earned the weekend title there.
Brayden Fritz of Bronson, Matthew Bates of Centreville and Sydney Bir of Sturgis were the three other finalists for last week’s award.
