In conjunction with the United States celebrating its 250th birthday this year, USA Today Co. newspapers in Michigan have been looking at some of the top athletes to come out of each region in the state.
Over the next several weeks, the Lansing State Journal will unveil some of the top athletes to come out of Greater Lansing. We will take a daily look at one of the top 10 male or female athletes from the region. These athletes are determined by more than just high school performance. Accomplishments in college and as a professional were also taken into consideration when determining the area’s best.
The athletes are not ranked in order. Here is a look at our latest female athlete.
Evelyn Johnson
The younger sister of Hall of Fame basketball star Earvin “Magic” Johnson also was a big hit on the court. Evelyn Johnson was also a big star for Everett and finished her three-year high school basketball career with 1,762 points. Her 804 points as a senior during the fall of 1978 ranks eighth for points in a season in the MHSAA online records. Johnson averaged 36.0 points per game that season and 29.9 during her varsity career.
Johnson also found success collegiately at South Carolina. She scored 1,620 points while playing in 113 career games from 1980 to 1983. Her career scoring average of 14.3 points per game ranks 10th in program history. Johnson also ranks eighth in program history with 674 career field goals.
