Brighton couple uses voices, monster books to boost statewide literacy

Karen Bell-Brege and Darrin Brege of Brighton have used the power of humor to entertain and educate for more than two decades.

The couple are the creators of numerous successful books, between words from Karen and illustrations from Darrin. They also present their character voice impressions at schools all over Michigan.

Karen and Darrin released their newest picture book “Bigfoot, Birdie and Bob” in November. They also created the series “Mick Morris Myth Solver” and “Ghost Board Posse.” In total, they’ve released 14 monster children’s books, which are available for purchase at karenanddarrin.com.

The duo has lived in Brighton for 22 years, and met after Karen started the first improv comedy troupe in Michigan: Totally Unrehearsed Theatre, which performed at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Royal Oak. Darrin had recently returned to Michigan after four years at animation school in Los Angeles, and decided to join the troupe.

“That stage brought everything,” Darrin said of Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle. “It was magic.”

Karen and Darrin are known for their impressions of Homer and Marge Simpson, SpongeBob SquarePants and Sandy Cheeks. They travel to schools all over the state, offering presentations that showcase their impressions and promote literacy — instead of slideshows, they rely on their improv background.

“We feel, if they’re engaged with us, they’re going to be interested in reading,” Karen said. “I think our humor has benefited us.”

“They want to hear a little bit more about the journey, the process and the push and grind of it,” Darrin added. “It inspires.”

“Bigfoot, Birdie and Bob” falls under the category of “Read to Dogs,” which focuses on (you guessed it) reading to dogs as opposed to parents or peers. The release won a Purple Dragonfly Book Award.

Karen and Darrin have partnered with Northwoods Soda in Williamsburg to release a special soda — “Biggie the Bigfoot Butterscotch Cream” — to coincide with the new picture book. According to the couple, proceeds from book and soda sales in 2026 will go toward the Michigan Reading Association.

The duo is often tapped for March is Reading Month, but the event (inspired by Dr. Seuss) can be frustrating for Karen.

“Every month should be reading month,” she said.

Still, their connection with students is unmatched.

“They’re going to remember how they feel — they had a great time,” Darrin said. “That’s the best thing about it, those 400 little faces laughing.”

“Bigfoot, Birdie and Bob” is available at 2 Dandelions Bookshop in Brighton, Fenton’s Open Book and Road Less Traveled Books in Farmington.
