Former Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde was let go by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
Lalonde and former University of Michigan defenseman Mike Van Ryn were replaced as assistant coaches by former Red Wings forward Daniel Alfredsson, ex-Northern Michgan defenseman Brad Werenka and former Oakland Grizzlies coach John Gruden.
Lalonde joined Craig Berube’s coaching staff in June of 2025, a little over five months after he was fired in Detroit. Berube was replaced last month by Jim Hiller, a former Red Wings defenseman and assistant coach.
Hired by the Red Wings at the start of the 2022-23 season, Lalonde went 89-86-23 in two seasons, missing the playoffs and replaced by Todd McLellan on Dec. 26, 2024.
Lalonde was also an assistant coach for Jon Cooper and the Tampa Bay Lightning, helping them win back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021.
He has also coached internationally with the United States, working as an assistant coach at the IIHF World Championships in 2023 and 2024.
