Multiple Oakland County communities are being affected by a water pump station failure on Thursday, July 16.An emergency boil water advisory was issued for northwestern Rochester Hills and a section of Oakland Township. Auburn Hills and Orion Township officials are urging water use restrictions.
The Great Lakes Water Authority confirmed in a statement that a “disruption” at about 8 a.m. on July 16 at its North Service Center Pump Station impacted water flow to not only Auburn Hills, Rochester Hills and Orion Township, but also Lake Orion and sections of Troy, as well as Oakland and Bloomfield townships.
Crews have begun restoring water pressures to the affected communities.
In Auburn Hills, the Department of Public Works issued a mandatory water restriction for the entire city.
“RESIDENTS AND WATER USERS SHALL CEASE WATER USAGE FOR NON-NECESSARY ACTIVITIES such as watering lawns, washing vehicles, filling outdoor pools, or other recreational water activities,” officials said on the city’s Facebook page. They added that the city’s water system is in an emergency operational state, and the mandatory restriction keeps necessary water use available for the city and adjacent communities.
The cause of the disruption is being investigated. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
