Bayview Yacht Club Regatta Director Ali Augsburger reported Sunday morning of that 85 of the 193 boats that set sail in the Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race Saturday, July 18, have retired.
“We are very fortunate that every single crew member has been accounted for and everyone is safe at this time,” she said in an updated posted to Facebook.
Augsburger also thanks nearby harbors for taking in the retired sailboats and expected some of the first boats to reach the island this evening.
She reported current conditions on Lake Huron had calmed, with 10-12 knot breeze and 4 foot waves.
Bayview had reported Saturday night 30 ships had retired following harsh conditions and equipment failures.
