2nd metro Detroit 2-year-old dies in water-related incident in week's time

A 2-year-old girl was pronounced dead after falling into a pool on Quarry Road in Wyandotte on Friday, June 20, according to Southgate police.

Southgate police were dispatched for a medical emergency around 8:15 p.m., and the initial investigation showed the child drowned after falling into a pool during a party, according to a city of Southgate Police Department Facebook post.

Multiple adults and children were in the pool area at the time, and it is unknown how long the child was in the pool before she was found, police said. An investigation is ongoing pending further medical findings, according to the Facebook post.

This was the second water-related fatality involving a metro Detroit toddler in the past week. A 2-year-old boy died after Macomb County sheriff’s deputies found him in the Clinton River after he was reported missing Monday, June 16.

Drowning is the leading cause of death among children ages 1-4, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 4,000 people die from drowning in the U.S. each year, according to the CDC.

For people younger than age 30, drowning rates were 1.5 times higher among Black people and two times higher among American Indian and Alaska Native people than those of white people, according to the CDC.

Individuals with autism are also at heightened risk for death by drowning, according to the CDC.
