Algonac special events plentiful this summer

Henry’s Club Cornhole and touch a truck planned

By Barb Pert Templeton

The June 17 meeting of the Algonac City Council had officials approving a trio of special event permits for activities coming up in the city over the next several months.

The first permit was from Henry’s Club for a Cornhole Fundraiser extravaganza on Saturday, July 12 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Riverfront Park. Tournament participants will sign up prior to the event.

The entry fee for the event is $20 per person and will be utilized for various projects in the city.

“Should be another fun event,” Mayor Rocky Gillis commented as the council unanimously approved the event.

Next up, Algonac Alive will host National Night Out and Touch a Truck on Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. The free event will be held at Smith Recreation Field and similar events are hosted across the country on the first Tuesday in August. The event not only honors first responders but it also promotes fire, police and community involvement.

Algonac Fire Chief Joe Doan noted on the special event application that the annual event promotes neighborhood goodwill and kids in attendance will have the opportunity to climb on, touch and explore an assortment of big trucks and vehicles.

“Touch a truck is fun,” Mayor Pro Tem Dawn Davey said, asking if this is the third or fourth annual event.

“This will be our third year,” Gillis said, adding that Fire Chief Joe Doan does a great job with the event.

“What I love is that somebody once told me Algonac is like vacation land,” Councilman Michael Bembas added.

He said in a sense it is because the summer has so many events going on. The Pickeral Tournament and the Art Fair and the list just keeps going.

“If anybody out there wants to part of any of these events see the city manager, there’s always room for more volunteers,” Bembas said. “Or help with the touch a truck there’s always something to be involved in it and beats sitting at home watching TV.”

Heading into the fall, Algonac Alive will host Halloween in the Nac’ on Saturday, Oc. 18 at Smith Recreation Park from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The plan calls for a Halloween parade at 1 p.m. with a line-up starting at 12:30 p.m. at 421 Michigan Avenue. Activities in the park will begin at 1 p.m. including games, swamp witch dancing, a bounce house, face painting, pony rides and music.

“I can’t even believe that we’re talking about Halloween in the Nac’ already,” Davey said.

“Hey we talk about Halloween year-round,” Bembas replied.

“Next year in April we should do Half-oween,” Gillis said.

“Oh, a new event in town, we’ve got Christmas July so why not,” Bembas laughed.
