The San Francisco 49ers appear to be on the hunt for more offensive line depth.
During the 49ers’ off day Friday they had tryouts with three offensive linemen according to the NFL transaction wire. Interior offensive linemen Doug Kramer, Joe Michalski and Lecitus Smith were all part of a tryout that only featured the three offensive linemen.
Kramer has played in parts of two NFL seasons and hasn’t played in a regular season game since 2024. He spent time at center and left guard for the Chicago Bears. His experience at LG makes sense with the 49ers cycling through options at the position while they search for a starter.
Michalski didn’t play at all last season as an undrafted rookie for the Denver Broncos.
Smith has played in 19 games across three seasons since the 2022 season. He played 10 games in 2022 all at right guard for the Arizona Cardinals. In 2024 he played two games for the New England Patriots, but he only played five snaps. Last season he started one game for the Green Bay Packers and played all 51 snaps at left guard.
Perhaps the 49ers are dealing with some undisclosed injuries that will come to light when the team is back in practice Saturday. There might also be a longer-term problem with reserve interior O-lineman Nick Zakelj who missed Thursday’s practice with an elbow injury he sustained at the end of Wednesday’s session.
With a wide open left guard battle and a handful of injuries on the offensive line, it’s not a surprise the 49ers are looking at unproven free agents who may be able to step into the 49ers offense and find success with another change of scenery.
