The second day of the three-day Downtown Canandaigua Art & Music Festival started off with fine, summery weather and included an 85th birthday celebration for former Mayor Ellen Polimeni.
But around 1 p.m. Saturday, cell phones began pinging with severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings, with crowds heading for the hills. Then came the downpour, with some making it back to their cars and others hiding out under stores awnings or inside shops.
The decision had already been made to end the event early Saturday because of the threat of bad weather when the rain hit.
