The Los Angeles Lakers had the opportunity to win their fourth straight game of the main NBA summer league in Las Vegas when they took on the Chicago Bulls on Thursday. Once again, they didn’t disappoint much.
After getting out to an early 8-2 lead, they outscored the Bulls 37-24 in the second quarter, and they never looked back. Los Angeles shot 49.2% from the field for the game and held Chicago to 38.5% shooting, resulting in a 105-82 win for the Purple and Gold.
Guard Chris Mañon continued to make a case that he may deserve some minutes with the Lakers in the NBA by leading his summer league squad in scoring with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting. He also had six rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block, and he continued to play the type of tenacious defense he’s known for.
Cameron Carr, the No. 24 pick in last month’s draft, had 14 points on 5-of-12 overall shooting. He missed all three of his 3-point attempts, but he continues to look like he’s ready for at least some small slivers of playing time once the NBA’s regular season starts in October. He did a good job of moving without the ball, which got him some good looks, both from the mid-range area and near the basket.
Second-year forward Adou Thiero scored 11 points, and while he was 3-of-9 from the field, he continues to show gradual improvement. When driving to the basket, he’s slowing down just enough to make better decisions, and he’s passing the ball out more during his forays to the hoop when appropriate. Thiero also posted seven rebounds, four assists and two steals, and he continues to run the floor well in transition.
Off the bench, forward Arthur Kaluma continued his fine play with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists in 21 minutes. He’s making a very strong case that he deserves a two-way contract.
For Chicago, forward Caleb Wilson, the No. 4 pick in this year’s NBA draft, shot 7-of-15 overall and logged 21 points, eight rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block, although he committed eight turnovers.
The Lakers will head to the summer league playoffs, where they will play a semifinal round game on Saturday. The opponent and the time are to be determined.
