4-vehicle crash closes part of North Indian Drive in Palm Springs

A four-vehicle crash on North Indian Canyon Drive left one person critically injured, prompting police to close the road between East Racquet Club Road and East Via Escuela on Tuesday evening, July 14.

The Palm Springs Police Department received reports of a multi-vehicle crash on Indian Canyon Drive, just north of Via Escuela, around 5:20 p.m., Capt. Gustavo M. Araiza wrote in an emailed statement.

Three people were taken to a local hospital, including one person in a critical condition.

Police arrested Gabriel Gutierrez-Roque, 30, of Rancho Cucamonga, whom they identified as the driver who caused the crash, on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Based on the preliminary investigation, Gutierrez-Roque changed lanes and sideswiped another vehicle, Araiza said. The second vehicle then crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a third vehicle head-on. Police did not explain how the fourth vehicle was involved.

Araiza said it was unclear how long the road would remain open, but that police would alert the public through Everbridge, an app that sends out notifications about critical incidents, once it reopens.
