The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to 217 W. Elm St. in Lone Tree at about 8 p.m. on Monday for a welfare check. Deputies found Richard Powers dead in his bedroom.

According to court documents, deputies believe Scott Powers went to a residence in Cedar Rapids and told the residents his dad was dead. He allegedly said, “I killed dad,” after being questioned about the blood on his body.

A witness told police that Scott Powers allegedly told a family member that he was going to kill his father. Richard Powers’ injuries were consistent with what Scott Powers described doing to his father, according to court documents.

Scott Powers is currently receiving treatment at University of Iowa Health Care, but was arrested and is in custody, according to a news release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
