Former NBA star guard reportedly worked out with Texas A&M this week

Texas A&M’s basketball program is in good shape under coach Bucky McMillan, who led the Aggies to the NCAA Tournament during his first season, which included an opening round victory over Saint Mary’s before falling to Houston in the Round of 32. After losing a majority of his first roster, led by senior forward Rashaun Agee, McMillan added seven transfer portal additions this offseason.

On paper, this is the most talented Texas A&M roster in over 20 seasons, as former Kansas State shooting guard PJ Haggerty averaged nearly 24 points per game last season, while NBA G-League guard Bryson Warren has yet to receive a waiver to play for the Aggies this fall, but all signs point to him suiting up in mid-November.

Texas A&M’s returning players include forward Mackenzie Mgbako, who missed all but seven games last season, while forwards Zach Clemence and Jamie Vinson are on the rise after thriving in their reserve roles. Also including transfer forwards Cade Phillips, Jalen Shelley, and guards Tyshawn Archie, Lukas Well, and Jalen Reece, Texas A&M’s chances of getting back to the NCAA Tournament remain high.

This week, former NBA star guard Isaiah Thomas, who was once in the conversation for MVP during his time with the Boston Celtics during the 2017 season, was reportedly in College Station on Wednesday and worked out with the 2026-2027 roster.

It’s fair to say that, despite the age gap, every current Texas A&M player is well aware of Thomas, who, at just 5’9″, became a two-time All-Star selection and spent nearly 14 seasons in the NBA, with a career scoring average of 17.5 PPG. Thomas currently serves as a scout for the Celtics, so it’s no surprise he took the time to watch and practice with the talented Aggie basketball squad.
