For an entire season, every other girls tennis player in the Gainesville area dreaded seeing Katelin Ossi.
Yes, the P.K. Yonge star is only a freshman. She might not look that intimidating on the court, but she packs a punch and showed why.
Ossi didn’t lose to a single local player in both singles and doubles in the 2026 campaign.
“I didn’t realize I hadn’t lost a match in Gainesville, and I was like ‘Oh that’s great,’” Ossi said.
That momentum carried over to the postseason, where Ossi became the lone Gainesville-area player to qualify for states in both singles and doubles, even though she needed to play six sets in one day in intense early summer heat in Florida.
Those numbers, as a freshman? Yeah, that’s more than enough to be the Gainesville Sun’s Girls Tennis Player of the Year. Ossi takes home this award for the second year in a row after claiming victory as an eighth grader last season.
She still maintains short-term goals, like getting past the Round of 16 at states next season, and longer term ones — such as playing in college.
To do that, she needs to boost her UTR to level nine. That’s tough, but she has the time and the work ethic to do so.
“Staying mentally tough is definitely super important because you can kind of lose yourself in matches if you’re not like that,” Ossi said. “So just being passionate about it every year and setting goals for myself, I can get there.”
Ossi leads a team of 10 players (five first and five second teams) from five Gainesville area schools.
Congratulations to all selected!

Not only did Ossi dominate Gainesville area competition, but the Blue Wave as a team also did the same under Franklin. PKY reached the region finals once again. P.K. Yonge didn’t lose to a local team this season, including narrow wins over Buchholz and Eastside.
Franklin sent three players to the all-area team, and Ossi spoke of Franklin’s contributions to her success, saying she makes her want to go to practice.
“Last year, I would get down on myself when I lost a point,” Ossi said. “This year, I tell myself that everything is going to be okay, and that I’m not disappointing anyone. She is always there to give me a hug and say, ‘You got it, let’s go.”’
