Fresh colors on gazebo appreciated

During public comments at the beginning of the recent meeting Dennis Onufer, with Pearl Painting Services, said he’s not currently a city resident but he grew up in Algonac and he recently painted the gazebo at the city park.

“I’m the man that painted the gazebo and I just wanted to personally come up thank everybody here and Artie,” Onufer said. “I hope everybody enjoys it.”

Members of the council thanked Onufer and gave him a round of applause.

During his report to the council the city manager said the city’s getting lots of compliments about the newly painted gazebo.

Approve VFW as nonprofit

Members of the council voted unanimously to approve Resolution 2026-06 recognizing VFW Auxiliary Post 3901 as a local non-profit organization. The VFW is a certified 501 ©(3) non-profit charitable organization whose goal is to provide fundraising opportunities to benefit their charities. A memo in the meeting packet from the VFW stated that they provide assistance to veterans, military families, scholarships, youth programs and community projects. In order to obtain a license from the state to host fundraisers the State of Michigan Charitable Gaming Division requires the local governing body to recognize the group’s existence in the community.

National Night Out/Touch A Truck event set

The council approved a special event permit for the annual National Touch-a-Truck Night Out event in Algonac. This year’s event will be on Tuesday, Aug. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith Recreation Field in the city. The free event for families includes kids seeing police, fire, construction and big rigs up close while also meeting professionals in the various fields who operate the vehicles. The annual National Night Out event is sponsored by Algonac Alive.

The special evening is meant to honor first responders while promoting police, fire and community relationships.

Emergency repair costs approved

An invoice from Morgan Excavating LLC, in the amount of $1,105 was approved by the city council. A letter in the recent meeting packet stated that a resident contacted the city on June 13 to report water was coming out of a manhole on Channelsyde Drive. The DPW determined that the sewer main was plugged causing the entire street to backup with waste water. Morgan Excavating, from Clyde Township was called in after hours to make the repair.

Selling tickets for electric bikes

During his council comments Councilman Michael Bembas said he’s part of the Algonac Clay Community Foundation and they are selling raffle tickets and winners can receive electric bikes.

“That we can still use on the side streets in Algonac,” Bembas said.

“For right now,” Councilwoman Cathy Harris added.

The money from ticket sales towards scholarships for kids in the community going to college and to several 501C charities, Bembas said.

“So please make sure you see me or Rocky or Artie and whoever else in that group selling tickets,” Bembas said.
