Abernathy woman dies in Castro County crash

An Abernathy woman was killed and another person injured in a wrong-way crash involving a vehicle and semitrailer on Tuesday morning in Castro County, authorities said.

A preliminary investigation showed that a 2014 Western truck tractor, towing a semitrailer, was traveling east on State Highway 194 approximately 6 miles southeast of Hart at about 8:10 a.m. Tuesday, July 7.

At the same time, a 2024 Ford Bronco was traveling the wrong direction on the highway, going west in the eastbound lane, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

The truck tractor’s driver took evasive action to avoid a collision and traveled into the westbound lane, according to the DPS, and the Ford also went back into the westbound lane and struck the semi-trailer.

After the impact, the Ford caught fire, and the truck tractor and its towed semi-trailer went into the north ditch, where it rolled over onto its side, the DPs said.

The Ford’s driver, identified as Stacy Maureen Stone, 57, of Abernathy, was pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries she sustained during the crash.

The truck tractor’s driver, a 29-year-old from Hereford, was taken to Plains Memorial Hospital in Dimmitt with minor injuries.

Both drivers had been wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Road conditions were dry and clear in a 75 mph zone. The Texas Highway Patrol handled the crash investigation, which remains ongoing.
