An Outagamie County assistant district attorney will be the next district attorney in Oconto County.
On July 7, Gov. Tony Evers announced Joshua Dryak will fill the vacancy created when Hannah Schuchart was appointed to the Oconto County Circuit Court.
“I am humbled and honored to be appointed as the District Attorney of Oconto County,” Dryak said in a press release. “I look forward to making Oconto County my home and promise that I will work hard to keep this community and its citizens safe, to hold offenders accountable for their conduct, and to treat those who interact with my office with fairness, dignity, and respect.”
Dryak previously worked in the Brown County and Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Offices and with the child welfare system in the Brown County Corporation Counsel’s Office. Since 2018, he has also served as a judge advocate in the U.S. Army Reserve, with active-duty experience as a special victims litigator and a deployment to Europe from 2023 to 2024.
Since 2022, he’s also taught law enforcement cadets as an adjunct faculty member at Fox Valley Technical College.
“A strong partnership between law enforcement and the District Attorney’s Office is essential to ensuring justice, accountability, and public safety,” Oconto County Sheriff Todd Skarban said in the release. “We are confident that District Attorney Dryak will be a valuable asset to our community, and we look forward to a productive and collaborative relationship working together to serve and protect the citizens of Oconto County.”
Dryak will serve for the remainder of the unexpired term that ends January 2029.
Schuchart left the post to replace Judge Michael T. Judge when he retired May 1 after more than 20 years on the bench. Schuchart had served as the Oconto County district attorney since 2022.
Evers had extended the deadline to be the new district attorney after applications were originally due April 10. On May 15, Evers announced he would accept applications on a rolling basis until the vacancy was filled.
“Joshua Dryak’s experience as a prosecutor and his commitment to serving the public will make him a great district attorney for the people of Oconto County,” Evers said.
