On the eve of the NBA’s free agency period, all eyes appear to be on the Golden State Warriors’ pursuit of LeBron James. On Monday, the Warriors appeared to make a move in the recruitment of James and potentially Washington Wizards big man Anthony Davis.
According to Shams Charania of ESPN, Draymond Green is declining his $27.7 million player option with the Warriors and will now become a free agent. The Warriors will now have flexibility to pursue James and Davis, per Charania.

Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports recently reported the Warriors were pursuing Davis in an attempt to recruit James to the Bay Area. The Warriors would likely need to part with Jimmy Butler and significant draft capital to acquire Davis from the Wizards. Green’s decision to decline his player option now gives the Warriors more flexibility and time to make a potential blockbuster move this summer.
Green has played all 14 seasons of his career with the Warriors, winning four championships, being named to the All-Star team four times and winning the Defensive Player of the Year in 2016-17. Green played 68 games for the Warriors last season, averaging 8.4 points on 41.8% shooting from the field to go along with 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in 27.5 minutes per game. Green finished tied 11th in Defensive Player of the Year voting last season.
Green’s move to decline his player option appears to be a sign he’s willing to take a discount to return to the Warriors as they attempt to pursue James and Davis to add alongside Curry for a veteran super team in the Bay Area.
