Woman killed crossing State Road 33 late at night in Lakeland

A woman was hit and killed while crossing State Road 33 on June 28.

Lakeland police officers responded to calls about a traffic crash involving a pedestrian in the 5700 block of State Road 33, a section of Lakeland Hills Boulevard southwest of the Villages at Bridgewater community, at approximately 12:37 a.m. on June 28.

Officers determined a black Mitsubishi SUV driven by 48-year-old Demetrius Berry was traveling south on State Road 33. A woman, whose identity has not been released, stepped onto the roadway and was struck by the vehicle. Lakeland police, Polk County Fire Rescue and Lakeland Fire Department responded to the scene. The woman was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The woman’s identity has yet to be released, pending notification of her next of kin.

The police department’s Traffic Homicide Unit responded to the scene to conduct an investigation and closed the roadway down for about three and a half hours.

Berry was not injured.
