Training camp for the Jacksonville Jaguars kicks off in about a month, so as part of our preview of what’s to come, we will be evaluating each positional battle that is expected to unfold.
What took place during offseason programs laid the foundation for each of these competitions and provided us with some insights into where things may stand. That said, what takes place during training camp and the preseason will ultimately determine who wins these roles.
Let’s start with the quarterback position.
What training camp competition is taking place at quarterback?
Nick Mullens had an up-and-down spring, but the expectation should be that he will continue to back up Trevor Lawrence. His experience in that role is quite valuable.
However, the QB3 role is up for grabs, and competing for that spot on the depth chart are Carter Bradley and Joey Aguilar. Last season, the third quarterback was on the Jaguars’ practice squad and not the 53-man roster.
What did we learn and see during offseason programs?
We didn’t gain much insight into where things stand between Bradley and Aguilar. But what I will say is that while upside and the quarterbacks’ performance in training camp will obviously be key in determining who wins that battle, the third quarterback can also be tasked with running the scout team offense, getting the Jaguars’ starting defense prepared for Sundays. This was a role that Bradley filled very well last season.
Predicting the winner
For now, I’ll pick Bradley over Aguilar, and the primary reason is his experience, not only operating at the NFL level but also his comfort in navigating Liam Coen’s system, which can come with a steep learning curve.
One reason why Aguilar could make a push is if his potential exceeds Bradley’s. Typically, with these back-end roster spots, teams are looking for upside more than anything.
