When you think of the Guerin Catholic boys lacrosse team, Gavin Soucie’s name pops up on the state marquee.
The attacker and midfielder was the state leader in points and goals during his junior year last season.
A year after they topped Evansville Memorial in the Class 1A state title game, Soucie and the Golden Eagles repeated as champions in a 19-10 win during the rematch against the Tigers in May. Soucie was named the offensive MVP.
His responses have been edited for clarity, length and style.
Question: How would you describe the work it took for the Guerin Catholic boys lacrosse team to win back-to-back state titles?
Answer: “It took a lot of dedication and determination to really wanting to improve and to do something that’s never been done.”
Question: What do two state championships in a row say about the team’s culture and identity?
Answer: “It shows how strong of a team we have and why people should want to play for GC. About how we should be in the talk for top (team) in state next year and how it’s not four teams that run Indiana anymore.”
Question: What do you think was the biggest reason behind your scoring success this past season?
Answer: “I believe the success came from my teammates being able to feed me and just learning how to adapt from game to game. Just playing free without worrying about the outcome as much and just play in the present.”
Question: How important is the continued growth of high school boys lacrosse in Indiana?
Answer: “The sport is growing as it should, but (I) believe it is a sport that deserves much more respect than given.”
Question: What mindset and goals do you hope to achieve as a senior in your last season playing Indiana high school lacrosse?
Answer: “I just want to improve consistently and maybe go for the state all-time points record if it falls into play. And go into 2A and shock a lot of people, and go far in the tournament.”
Question: Do you have any dreams post-high school?
Answer: “My goal is to become a pilot which I’m already training for and hopefully play college lacrosse.”
