McClugage Bridge span closing for repairs. Here's what to know

The westbound span of the McClugage Bridge will close on July 1 as a multi-year, $70 million project begins to refurbish that side of the bridge to complement its newer, eastbound counterpart.

The Illinois Department of Transportation said that the westbound portion of the bridge connecting Tazewell and Peoria counties will shut down Wednesday, July 1, to begin work on the project, which will encompass redecking, painting and other repairs for both the McClugage and the bridge over Adams Street below.

IDOT said that traffic patterns would change significantly as a result of the closure, with westbound traffic shifting onto the newly constructed eastbound span of the bridge, thanks to a series of crossovers onto the bridge. Two lanes will each be dedicated to westbound and eastbound traffic across the bridge, with reductions to one lane to allow for traffic on U.S. 150 (War Memorial Drive) and U.S. 24 traffic to merge as drivers approach the bridge.

Those driving through the area should expect delays and allow for extra time getting through, according to IDOT. Drivers are being asked to consider alternative routes, if possible, and to pay attention to any changing conditions or signs in the work zones. They are also being asked to obey speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

The renovation work on the westbound span is set to be completed sometime in 2028.
