49ers named ideal landing spot in hypothetical trade for Pro Bowl CB

The San Francisco 49ers could be in the market for a cornerback upgrade, and CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell has an idea of where they might turn.

In a piece examining five NFL stars who could force Giannis Antetokounmpo-style NBA trades, Podell identified Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward as a natural fit for San Francisco. The five-time Pro Bowler has no guaranteed money left on his deal and, similar to former Browns teammate Myles Garrett, may simply be ready for a new team that has playoff aspirations.

Ward, 29, is set to enter the penultimate season of a five-year, $100.5 million contract extension and is extremely tradeable. Podell thinks it might only cost a fourth-round pick to acquire him, too. San Francisco, meanwhile, makes the most sense as a landing spot because of the 49ers’ cap flexibility, their urgency to compete and the team’s lack of a true star at the position.

The 49ers are in win-now mode with an aging roster headed by soon-to-be 38-year-old All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, soon-to-be 33-year-old wide receiver Mike Evans, soon-to-be 33-year-old tight end George Kittle and 30-year-old running back Christian McCaffrey. San Francisco can afford the swing for Ward in 2026 as the 49ers currently possess the most cap space in football with $71.7 million, per OverTheCap.com, and then they can easily move off him if they desire in 2027 while saving $11.271 million by releasing him.

The broader division context adds even more urgency. The NFC West is loaded, and the 49ers need to keep up with the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and the NFC runner-up Los Angeles Rams, who just traded for Garrett and also cornerback Trent McDuffie this offseason.

Ward would give San Francisco a proven No. 1 corner to shore up a secondary that will need to be airtight if the team expects to make a deep postseason run. He has 18 interceptions, 104 passes defensed and 361 combined tackles in his career.

The 49ers head into 2026 with Deommodore Lenoir, Renardo Green, Upton Stout, Nate Hobbs, Jack Jones and 2026 rookie Ephesians Prysock as the team’s top cornerbacks. That’s not an ideal group in a division with Puka Nacua, Davante Adams and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Despite earning Pro Bowl selections in four of the past five seasons, he’s played in just one playoff game in this stretch since 2021 — a 45-14 blowout loss at the Houston Texans. A move to the Bay would give Ward the contender he’s been missing, and the 49ers a cornerback who can match up with anyone in the NFC.
