Tough start proves too much as Red Wings fall on road

The Charlotte Knights scored in each of the first three innings and never looked back in a 10-2 win over the Rochester Red Wings on Wednesday night at Truist Field.

Charlotte’s Dustin Harris started the scoring with a solo homer in the first, and Dru Baker’s three-run shot in the second stretched the lead to 4-0. Nolan Jones added an RBI groundout in the third before Rochester finally answered in the sixth, when Christian Franklin launched a two-run homer that cut the deficit to 5-2.

Any momentum from Franklin’s homer disappeared quickly. In the bottom of the sixth, Baker lined a two-run double to center, Edgar Quero followed with an RBI single and Harris added a sacrifice fly as Charlotte pushed the lead to 9-2.

The Knights finished the night with 17 hits, including three apiece from Baker, Quero, Harris and Andy Weber. Baker drove in five runs and scored three times. Rochester was held without a hit after the sixth inning and got two hits from Brady House and one each from Franklin, Glasser, King, Hassell III and Wiemer.

Charlotte pitcher Mason Adams threw five scoreless innings before the bullpen allowed Franklin’s homer. Chandler Champlain was charged with five earned runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings in the loss for Rochester.
