Donate your old shoes

The Algonac Faith Coalition, which consists of churches of various denominations in the city, are collecting used shoes. Councilman Michael Bembas said the used shoes are sent to Sketchers who then cleanup and fix the shoes. The shoes are sent to impoverished countries around the world including to Africa, Asia and South America.

“So, if you have old shoes, ladies and guys, in your closet that you’re not wearing them anymore please drop them at the church, or you know where I work and most of you know where I live also,” Bembas said during his council comments at a June 16 meeting.

Davey addresses her social media use

During her council comments at the end of the recent council meeting Mayor Pro Tem Dawn Davey said she wanted to briefly address her role on the council and also her seat on the Board of Directors for the ARC of St. Clair County.

“There are things that are incredibly import to me and I don’t yank chains unless it’s important,” Davey said. “I have some chains to yank over some issues up at the county but those don’t have anything to do with me being a member of city council.”

She said and yes, the issues she’s involved with are going to be on social media and they involve her daughter and the community of adults who are like her daughter.

“I don’t see where the health department has anything to do with Blue Water Transportation, but I get to talk about these things but they don’t have anything to do with me sitting up here,” Davey said.

She admitted that she has been told by several people that she should remember that it was suggested that she stay off social media.

“There are things that are important to me and I won’t stop,” Davey said. “I’m not nasty with anybody, I’d ask anybody to bring it to me, show me where I’ve been nasty. I’m not. These things are important to me and I get to do them.”

The pool mural will be expanding

Mayor Rocky Gillis took a few moments during his comments to say the recent city pool grand opening went very well. He also thanked two local artists, Kathy Doan and Janice DeMonte for the ‘beautiful mural on the white wall that used to be there.”

“They’re not quite done,” City Manager Artie Bryson said. “They are expanding, that’s what Janice does, underneath she’s going to do a pirate ship, part of it’s going to be underwater and I requested a red headed mermaid.”

Bryson said she’s also going to do some underwater sea coral and some seat turtles because that will be under the pool.

“Very, very cool,” Gillis said.

Pearl Beach Lions Medical Closet

The Pearl Beach Lions are pushing their medical closet now for those who need wheelchairs, or walkers, according to Mayor Rocky Gillis, who also happens to be the new president of the club. Those in need just have to place a call to the club. The Pearl Beach Lions Club is located at 9790 Phelps Road. Call (586)747-6763

“It’s kind of easier to have one person to call then to try to call all the different churches, I know I’ve picked up from different churches because they don’t have the staffing to handle things,” Gillis said. “We all can do out thing and we’re really pushing our medical closet.”
